Holdbacks the latest Merchant Account concern

Whether you already have a merchant account to process credit card transactions, are looking to switch or compare merchant account providers, or need a merchant account for the first time, there are many pitfalls to avoid.  These include processing delays, changing fees and rates, rules on chargebacks — and the latest hot button on “holdbacks.

Tight credit, rising business bankruptcies and changes in how consumers use their credit cards are contributing to an unusual amount of financial ferment involving credit cards.

For small business owners, the top credit card hot button right now is holdbacks.  This is a percentage of your overall credit card receipts that the card processor or merchant bank keeps to cover possible chargebacks if a customer returns something or demands a refund for other reasons. Lately, merchant banks and card processors have started requiring new or bigger holdbacks to cushion their own bottom lines should customers seek refunds after a business goes bust.

Ask about your card processor’s holdback or “rolling reserve” policies.  If your business is considered high risk (those that sell exclusively online often are), or has a less-than-stellar credit rating, you may be facing higher holdback or reserve requirements.  Other high risk categories include merchants selling only a few high-ticket items; those with high processing volume, and business owners with a low personal credit score.

Check your statements! Some merchants are missing money they didn’t even know was gone.  Find out if any cash is being held back, and if so, at what rate, and under what conditions will you get it back.  Some small businesses have successfully appealed a holdback and retrieved their funds. Others find themselves shopping for a different merchant account provider. Before you decide to switch, however, ask if you are on the hook for an early termination fee.

Take steps to reassure your account provider about your business prospects. Consider upgrading your point-of-sale (POS) systems, software and ecommerce website to a higher security level. This can decrease your exposure to credit card fraud, and offer more comfort to the merchant bank.

An excellent resource I recently discovered in this area is MerchantCouncil.org, a web site that offers a wealth of facts, helpful tips and information about merchant accounts, geared to small business. It’s written and organized primarily by Ben Dwyer, a small business owner himself.

Credit Card Processing and the Durbin Amendment

Have you heard about the Durbin Amendment, which went into effect on October 1, 2011? If you have a merchant account, or you process payments in any way, then you need to know how this landmark law can affect your business.

Facts about the Durbin Amendment

The Durbin Amendment is a landmark decision. This is the first time we have ever seen this large of a reduction in payment processing costs. This cuts the costs for Debit transactions almost in half. Combined, debit transactions make up 50-70% of the processing done by merchants. Imagine paying up to half of what you currently pay on 50-70% of the cards you are currently processing?

How You Can Save Money with the Durbin Amendment

At Quantum Merchant Services, we are telling all of our customers about the Durbin Amendment and the impact that it is going to have on their bottom line. Upfront honesty, it’s all part of the QMS Difference. If your merchant services company hasn’t told you about the savings in the Durbin Amendment, then give us a call today to find out how you can take advantage of this new law. 1-888-881-0657.

Free Account Review

Fax us your current statements. We’ll look over them. If we can save you money, we’ll let you know. If we can’t, we’ll tell you, no gimmicks or fast talk.

Why it's important to choose a reliable Credit Card Processing Company

Whether you’re looking to make a switch or picking one for the first time, choosing a merchant processor is a very important decision and can be vital to the overall success of your business.

One of the most important ways to make your business thrive is to please your customers and, many times, that means offering a variety of payment methods. According to one estimate, businesses forfeit up to 80 percent of consumer impulse buys if they don't accept credit cards. But, before making the switch, or picking one for the first time, business owners need to select their merchant processing service with care. To date, in 2011, the BBB has received more than 1,700 complaints against credit card merchant and processing services.

“Accepting credit cards gives customers options, whether it’s to charge a purchase and pay it off over time, or to use a debit card rather than write a check. By offering your customer options, you are opening the doors for increased revenue,” However, before selecting your merchant processing service, it’s imperative that you do your research to avoid putting your business and its success at risk.”

Quantum Merchant Services recommends the following tips to consider when selecting a merchant processing service:

Ask around. Like with any important business decision, always make sure to get at least three estimates and check the BBB Review® of the merchant processing service. It may also be worth asking other fellow business leaders what service they use to get a feel for its track record.

Know where to turn. Make sure the merchant processing service has a solid support team. Can you contact them 24 hours a day? This is very important to business owners who are trying to process a card outside of the typical business hours. In any case, technical support is a must and it’s vital to your business’ success to make sure that the merchant processing service you choose has it.

Try them out. Don’t settle without a trial period. By making sure that the merchant processing service you choose has a 100 percent money-back guarantee before selecting them, you can save yourself a lifetime of hassle. See how the service tries out. Do they keep every promise that they made to you?

Make sure every penny you spend is necessary. If you have a question regarding a fee that you were charged, ask! Staying competitive with other merchant services is the name of the game for theses processors so they will want to keep you happy.

Benefits of Accepting Credit Cards

The Benefits of Accepting Credit Cards

Security – Besides the obvious fear of losing or being robbed of their cash, more and more consumers appreciate the security of using credit cards offered by their bank. This often comes in the form of backing up the consumer in the event of a dispute, lost card, etc. In addition, these protections are often provided for free as long as the event is reported in a timely manner.
Tracking – All of a consumer’s purchases are accounted for and can be totaled at the end of each day, week, month, and year. This also assures the consumer accuracy and regularity when it comes to their bank accounts and speeds up the rectifying process.
Convenience and Protection – When purchasing high dollar items with their credit or debit card, consumers are free to do so without having to write a check or carry large sums of cash. Some cards offer insurance for larger ticket items as part of the agreement. Many of the higher-end cards also offer protection on certain items purchased in the event of theft or acts of God. In addition, the record of the purchase can also be valuable for insurance claims.
Employee Purchases – Many employees make purchases on the behalf of their employers, or when they travel on company business. These people are often issued a company credit card that is to be used for all purchases for the company. These potential customers are therefore limited to merchants and service providers that accept credit cards.
Rewards – People who are enrolled in rewards programs will often go out of their way to pay by credit card. There are special incentives and rewards programs offered by almost every bank or Credit Card Company to their customers today. The points can go towards travel, shopping, even event tickets. While it is true that the merchant generally pays slightly higher rates for accepting these cards, the customers that use this type of card tend to spend more because they are incentivized.
Business to Business – Many sales can be lost to B2B purchasing by individual specialty type buyers and their companies. Businesses that are making purchases of products or services for their own internal use often prefer to pay with a credit card. This usually is for accounting reasons, but by not accepting credit cards you are losing out on the opportunity to serve those specialized and likely repeat customers.
Business Travelers – A smaller, but relevant group of potential customers are the business travelers. These customers almost always avoid carrying cash on them in any large amounts, plus they are more than likely writing much of their trips off of their taxes, so they want receipts as well as clear documentation in the form of a credit card statement.
Every day, credit card companies are finding new ways to entice consumers to use their plastic rather than paying with cash or a check. At first it may seem like the cost of accepting credit cards is too high for your business, but the truth is in most cases you cannot afford not to. Every year the numbers show that more and more consumers are using plastic to pay for their wants and needs, so it is better to get on board the trend before you are left behind.

Quantum merchant Services offers ATM's also

ATM’s and Quantum Merchant Services

Depending on the program you choose your business can make up to $2.00 per transaction with our ATM program!!

Leasing and/or Purchasing ATMs
Quantum Merchant Services offers an affordable leasing program through a third-party company. This program allows an ATM to be purchased without paying for the full value of the terminal upfront. You can begin earning revenue from the terminal and have it pay for itself each month!

Free Placement Program
Quantum Merchant Services offers a unique program to place ATMs at certain business locations with no expense to the merchant. QMS is always looking for high volume locations to place ATMs, free of charge. This allows you to earn revenue and increase foot traffic without having to incur the capital expense of purchasing an ATM machine.

Connectivity Options

Dial
A dedicated phone line is the traditional connectivity option for ATMs and offers a cost effective, reliable connection.

IP
An Internet Protocol connection offers a high speed option to ensure quick ATM transactions. This option eliminates the need to maintain a dedicated line for the terminal. QMS’ ATM Router supports all locations that are IP Enabled or utilize T1, DSL or Cable. ATM IP Connect employs “plug and play” usability for an effortless installation without the need for additional software or programming. ATM Connect boasts a variety of security standards such as Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Protocols and Triple DES Data Encryption to minimize risk.

Wireless
or locations that do not have a dedicated phone line available and are not IP Enabled, QMS’ wireless solution is the ideal option. Quantum Merchant Services can help you reduce the cost of operating your ATM and improve your transaction speed with a Hercules wireless router. Like an IP connection, the wireless option eliminates the need for a dedicated phone line as well as any associated phone bills. A wireless connection also provides the flexibility to place an ATM anywhere in the store!

Cash Management

Cash Management Options
QMS offers two different cash options to maximize convenience and to ensure that your ATM is always stocked.

Merchant Cash
In our most popular option, business owners stock their own machine and are then reimbursed by Quantum merchant Serviecs. QMS’ rapid replenishment initiative ensures that your funds are reimbursed within 48 hours. This option allows you to stock as often as necessary so that there are no breaks in your revenue stream. With this option, you don’t necessarily have to stock the terminal with thousands of dollars – many merchants simply recycle their $20 bills into the terminal at the end of each day to keep the ATM operational.

QMS Vault Cash
Another option is our in-house vault cash solution which allows business owners to completely avoid getting involved with the handling of cash. With this program, Quantum Merchant Services handles all aspects of your cash management and ATM replenishment. Our reporting and forecasting system will ensure that your ATM is replenished regularly by our armored carrier service. This option is ideal for locations with multiple machines such as arenas, airports and hospitals.

Prepaid Card Services a Rapidly Growing Segment of the Retail Marketplace

Prepaid Cash Card Vendors Are Prospering

Pre paid services are the 3rd fastest growing segment in the convenience/grocery store segment of retail. Offering Prepaid visa, mastercard, phone cards for pre paid verizon and t mobile as well as long distance calling cards to european, african and many other countries is a way for your retail operation to draw in more customers and add an income stream.

The cards, which have the Visa, MasterCard and Discover logos, act like portable checking accounts, though they are replenished with deposits made at retail outlets rather than banks.

The business serves a market that has existed for decades among the 44 million adult Americans who do not have bank accounts. And some experts put the size of the market even higher, at 73 million, to include potential cash card customers who have little access to bank services because they have low incomes and are unable to maintain minimum account balances.

Yet the number of “unbanked” and “underbanked” people is growing rapidly in the current economic crisis. The Mercator Advisory Group, a research service focused on the credit and payments industry, estimated in November that the volume of transactions on general-purpose prepaid cards totaled more than $4 billion in 2008. It forecasts an increase to $7.2 billion in 2009 and $10.8 billion in 2010.

The resemblance to bank services is unmistakable and Quantum Merchant Serviecs was enthusiastic in describing what it sees as a new era for pre paid business. “In the next few months, we are going to be rolling out new financial services for cash card customers. The general-purpose cash card business is at an inflection point.”

“A retailer sees people coming in to load cash onto their cards and says, ‘These people are using me as a bank — and that’s good. I should sell them something while they’re here.’ ”

Either way, traditionally or with new financial services, a cash business is growing while credit services retreat.

You can find more information on pre paid card services by contacting

Credit card processing on the upswing

New research finds growth in credit card processing

More and more businesses are accepting credit cards.

Tag: Credit Card Processing

A new report by Research and Markets explores electronic payment processing market and reveals that the industry is growing. The study, which is called Payment Cards in the country, discusses the increasing number of businesses that are accepting credit cards, noticeable trends and future forecasts.

The report found some key tendencies. One of them is a well-developed market of card usage, with 3.7 cards per person. Furthermore, most card-issuing activity can be attributed to the five largest banks in the nation, which account for 61 percent of its credit industry.. Finally, gas stations, coffee shops and restaurants, remain the most popular businesses where credit cards are used.

Besides explaining these findings, the document details future opportunities for payment processing. Analysis on regulations and future legislation is also incorporated.

The demand for credit card processing systems continues to grow globally. In the U.S. alone, the credit industry produces more than $40 billion in revenues, and approximately 2,000 companies offer payment services
